IBHA World Championship Show Returns To Memphis.
The
rigs started pulling in the Agricenter as early as
Monday and continued for 12 days. Buckskins, Duns, Red
Duns and Grullas from 25 states were arriving to compete
for Circuit titles as well as World Champion and Reserve
World Champion awards. The WarmUp to the World Circuit
of Shows consisted of 6 judges over 4 days. Also
included in the Circuit were the Pee Wee and NSBA
classes. The last day of the Circuit was particularly
busy for the youth of IBHA. Along with showing that day
the members of the youth teams were decorating their
barn areas with “Dun in the Sun” as the theme.
Wednesday morning there was excitement in the
air…..the World Show had begun. At
10:00am the arena was full. The
Grand Entry started with Emily Benson from
Missouri
carrying the American flag, followed by Stacie Reihl
from Wisconsin with the IBHA flag. Next was the current
Miss Buckskin World, Joanna Gunn, followed by the 2009
queen contestants and charter club representatives.
Behind them the youth teams made their debuts with their
interpretations of Dun in the Sun. The World Show
stewards and judges then entered the arena. After the
IBHA Executives were announced the Oak Ridge Boys ended
the ceremony with an acappella version of the National
Anthem. After a brief break, the first round of judging
began for the 2009 queen contestants. They each did the
first of two horsemanship patterns that are scored by
the judges. Classes then resumed for the day. The
Memphis Convention
Bureau
sponsored a much appreciated ice cream social that
afternoon. Along with the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream that
was provided, a huge cake was presented to George and
Rosemary Stevenson from Arizona in honor of their 61st
anniversary. George and Rosemary have been a part of
the IBHA family for 21 years and have spent 20 of their
anniversary’s at the World Show. Now that’s dedication!
After classes ended for the day it was time for the
Exhibitor’s Party. Although the AYCE BBQ was delicious
it was the socializing in the air conditioning that was
enjoyed the most. The Circuit awards were then presented
to all winners. To see the complete list of Circuit
winners see the article “IBHA WarmUp to the World
Winners”. The queen candidates began the second round of
judging by introducing themselves with a brief speech.
The audience listened carefully as the contestants
answered a random question they picked out of a hat.
Afterward the girls helped with the scholarship auction
by bringing the items to each table for a closer look.
Many thanks to Tim Conlin who is the auctioneer for this
event, and ringmen Mike Bade, Benny Rouse and Eugene
Zimermann. The auction raised over $4000.00. The
exibitor’s dance ended the night and YES that was all in
one day! The second queen’s ride was Thursday with the
contestant’s getting another chance to show their riding
skills. After the show they were treated to dinner by
the Butcher Shop. While they were enjoying a dinner
specially made by Simpson, the rest of the exhibitors
were enjoying the picnic hosted by the youth. After the
“tube steaks” (OK – hot dogs) were settled the wheel
barrel races began. Liza Houghton picked the winning
team of Chip Williams and Nathan Houghton. Much fun was
had by all.
The
IBHA World Sale was held on Friday evening. Although the
consignments were down, the prices held at decent
figures. The sale was handled by West Kentucky Horse &
Real Estate Auctioneers with Wayne Boyd calling the sale
and Diane Boyd working the table. The 2010 World Sale
will be August 6th.
Saturday is the last day of the show. Along with the
exhibitors and queen contestants, the youth have been
competing all week for Team Tournament honors. The 8 day
IBHA World Week ends with the Queens Ball. Everyone has
worked hard this week and will be rewarded this night.
