GREEN CREEK RANCH, DUBLIN, TEXAS GUEST CONSIGNOR OF DRIFTWOOD MARES. Bill and Anita McKesson have agreed to consign 5 DRIFTWOOD bred yearling mares to the 2010 IBHA World Sale. One of the largest breeders of DRIFTWOOD bred horses, Bill believes that the addition of the DRIFTWOOD bloodlines will be an asset to the IBHA Sale. Following is a look at the Green Creek Ranch consignments, one of Bill's DRIFTWOOD stallions and a history of the ranch.
GREEN CREEK RANCH Texas Bred Driftwood Horses Green Creek Ranch owners, Bill & Anita McKesson, can’t remember ever being without a horse. The most common breed of horse in Texas while Bill and Anita were growing up, that all the cowboys were riding, was King, Leo and Hancock In 2000, a sale catalog from Four P Cattle Company, Upton, Wyoming, found it’s way to to the ranch mailbox and that catalog had several Driftwood bred horses for sale. Having always heard of the Driftwood breed from the days when Bill was rodeoing, they decided to make the trip to Wyoming to take a look at the Driftwood horses. They purchased their first 3 mares that year which were out of Wilywood and Lone Drifter. When the foals were born the next spring, they were just what they expected. They returned to the sale the next year, and not only did they buy more Driftwood mares but they bought a Driftwood stallion called Babbitt Drift, an own son of Cowboy Drift by Orphan Drift. The first crop of Babbitt Drift foals were sold right off the mares at weaning. From Wyoming, Bill and Anita started going to Arizona, California and Montana to buy Driftwood mares. Not only were they buying mares, but they started taking their Driftwood mares to Gill Cattle Company in California to breed to White Lighting Ike, the last producing grandson of Driftwood. Green Creek Ranch now has 40 producing Driftwood mares and 6 Driftwood bred stallions. Out of 40 mares, the ranch normally raises between 10-15 buckskin colts every year. “People who visit the ranch seem to think we are breeding for color but that’s incorrect -we’re breeding for quality. The color is just a plus in the Driftwood horse. Buckskins, palominos and roans are very common to the breed. “ Bill recalls his dad telling him as a youngster, “When you look at a horse, start at his knees and look down. If you don’t like what you see, don’t look any further.” Driftwood horses have stood the test of time and is the chosen bloodline for cowboys and cowgirls throughout the country because of their stamina and their cow sense. Over the last six decades, there has been 47 world championships made aboard Driftwood horses and 170 National Finals Rodeo qualifiers. Not another breed of horse can make this statement. Green Creek Ranch has been outcrossing some of their mares to Dash Ta Fame and Frenchmans Guy. Both Frenchmans Guy and Dash Ta Fame are Driftwood bred horses. Dash Ta Fame traces back to an own daughter of Driftwood by the name of Hug Me Tight. Frenchmans Guy traces back to Driftwood through Prissy Cline, an own daughter of Driftwood Ike by Driftwood. Green Creek Ranch keeps a minimum of 12.50% to 25% Driftwood blood in their colts. For a horse that died in 1960, that’s quite a bit of Driftwood blood brought forward. Driftwood was nominated to the AQHA Hall of Fame in 2006. More information can be found on Driftwood, known as Speedy, in the Western Horseman Book, Legends, Volume II. Bill and Anita urge you to attend the IBHA Sale, August 6, in Memphis to see their consignments and be the first to purchase a DRIFTWOOD bred mare at the sale. They look forward to meeting the members of IBHA. For more information on the GREEN CREEK RANCH and their horses go to www.texasbreddriftwoodhorses.com.
